Our Academics
The curriculum at South Broward Montessori Charter School utilizes the Montessori Methodology and adheres to the teachings of Maria Montessori and her educational philosophy, while also meeting the Broward County School District requirements of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).
Mathematics
Literacy
Within the language curriculum, students will be exposed to topics such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, literature, phonics, word study, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.
Each of these subareas uses the Montessori scope and sequence to guide the students’ learning, and which will lead to proficiency and progression. Various supplementary programs will be utilized including Bob Books, Primary Phonics, Journeys, Worldly Wise, Classical Roots, and Top Score Writing.
Because of the individualized nature of our reading/language arts program, the needs of all students are met through the utilization of a variety of teaching strategies.
Our mathematics program uses the Montessori curriculum to teach and guide students through the various math concepts, by establishing a good foundation of number concepts with the Numeration lessons.
Additional topics covered as part of the math curriculum include linear counting, place value, computation (four operations), memorization of math facts, geometry, fractions, telling time, counting money, analyzing graphs, measurement, and application word problems.
All concepts are taught in a concrete manner using hands-on materials. This approach to learning creates a deeper understanding of the child’s mind and leads to the true acquisition of the skill, not simply memorization.
Supplementary math aids such as practice worksheets, math games, and the Florida Go Math book will also be used to help transition the child from concrete learning to abstract thinking.
Science
Our cultural studies curriculum will be taught according to Maria Montessori’s vision known as “Cosmic Education.” She believed that children should be taught about the past, present, and future of the world around within the context of the story, a story based on evidence and reality.
Students are first told the stories known as the “Great Lessons,” which sets the tone for the entire school year.
Then they begin in-depth studies beginning with the Story of the Universe, which includes the presentation of the Big Bang Theory.
Over the course of the year, students learn about the Story of the Stars, the Solar System, the Earth, and the special relationship between the Sun and the Earth. The year concludes with lessons on the evolution of life on Earth (including humans) and human civilization, progress, and development over time. Geography, History, Economics, Civics, and Government are also studied within the context of the story where appropriate.
Supplementary aids such as practice worksheets, science experiments, Science Fusion, and Harcourt Social Studies will be used to enhance the lessons within the cultural studies topics.
Fine Art
The Fine Arts program encompasses art and music appreciation, design, performance, and history.
These programs will be offered as ‘Specials Classes’ within the normal school day.
All students will attend these curriculum programs, which follow a scope and sequence appropriate for the curriculum and which meet the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.
Physical Education
The physical education curriculum includes a variety of developmental activities emphasizing fine motor and gross motor skill development.
The curriculum focuses on movement exploration through various locomotor and non-locomotor experiences. It includes discussion of body awareness/changes, healthy living (nutrition and wellness), first aid, safety, and exercise.
It emphasizes physical fitness and a basic application of individual skills within the team sport environment.
Our Academics
South Broward Montessori Charter School utilizes the Montessori teaching methodology and science-based practices to provide quality instructions to elementary-level students. Academic content includes Montessori-specific subjects and all required learning standards from the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.).

Creating healthy eating habits begins at a very young age.
With obesity on the rise in the United States, it is imperative that we educate our children about proper nutrition and model it through our teachings.
Our school highly regards healthy eating/living both in and out of the classroom.
The curriculum will emphasize and teach the benefits of healthy eating and food choice.
